Healing begins with understanding
A compassionate space for healing

Every wound has a story.
Every story deserves to be heard.

Discover the experiences beneath our behavior—and the possibilities for awareness, connection, accountability, and healing.

Welcome to When Wounds Speak

Look beyond the behavior. Discover the wound.

When Wounds Speak (WWS) is a mental health education and storytelling platform founded by Dr. Caroline Z. Kristo, Ph.D., LMFT. We explore how experiences such as rejection, abandonment, betrayal, shame, oppression, and family conflict can shape the ways we see ourselves and relate to others.

Through stories, reflection, education, and pathways to professional support, WWS invites people to approach emotional pain with both compassion and responsibility.

— When Wounds Speak

What wounds are you carrying?

Explore the stories beneath the surface.

Recognizing patterns is often the beginning of understanding them.

01 / CONNECTION

Rejection & Abandonment

Explore how experiences of being left out, overlooked, or left behind may influence trust, belonging, and relationships.

02 / FAMILY

Parent & Childhood Wounds

Reflect on emotional neglect, parental conflict, attachment, and the patterns families sometimes carry across generations.

03 / IDENTITY

Shame & Self-Worth

Understand the ways painful experiences can shape inner narratives, confidence, boundaries, and identity.

04 / TRUST

Betrayal & Emotional Safety

Consider the impact of broken trust and the gradual work of rebuilding a sense of safety.

05 / SURVIVAL

Hyper-Independence

Explore why self-reliance can become a protective response—and when it may keep us disconnected.

06 / HEALING

Breaking the Cycle

Make room for reflection, new responses, healthier connections, and purposeful change.

Our guiding framework

The Kristo Emotional Wound
Healing Model (KEWHM)

Developed by Dr. Caroline Z. Kristo, KEWHM is a framework for exploring emotional wounds and the ways they may influence thoughts, reactions, relationships, and behavior. It encourages a compassionate, accountable approach to reflection and healing.

01

Notice

Recognize recurring emotional and behavioral patterns.

02

Understand

Explore experiences and meanings that may underlie those patterns.

03

Respond

Practice healthier coping, boundaries, and relational choices.

04

Grow

Build awareness, connection, and sustainable personal change.

These four themes are an introductory website overview, not a formal or validated description of KEWHM stages. KEWHM is not presented as an independently validated treatment or a guaranteed outcome.

A path toward support

You do not have to navigate your wounds alone.

Understanding your emotional wounds can be meaningful. Working with a licensed mental health professional may offer a supportive space to explore them more deeply, develop coping skills, and work toward healthier relationships.

Our vision is a network of independently licensed therapists who complete KEWHM training and integrate the framework with clinically appropriate, evidence-informed care. Clients will be able to compare specialties, locations, and transparent self-pay fees before requesting an appointment.

Find a KEWHM-Trained Therapist

Therapy may help you explore:

✓ Relationship and attachment patterns

✓ Family conflict and painful transitions

✓ Emotional triggers and self-worth

✓ Grief, rejection, and difficult experiences

✓ Boundaries, coping, and personal growth

Our therapist directory is in development. No KEWHM-trained clinicians, session prices, or appointment availability are represented as confirmed yet. Services will be cash-pay; availability, licensure, and fees will be verified before booking.

For licensed mental health professionals

Help build the KEWHM therapist network.

We are developing a professional training pathway for licensed clinicians interested in incorporating the Kristo Emotional Wound Healing Model into their clinical practice.

01 / APPLY

Express interest

Share your license type, jurisdiction, and clinical background through a professional inquiry.

02 / TRAIN

Complete KEWHM training

Learn the model's principles, ethical application, scope, and documentation standards once the program is available.

03 / CONNECT

Join the future directory

Eligible clinicians may be listed after training completion and independent verification of licensure and qualifications.

Training is in development. KEWHM training does not replace licensure or constitute a government-recognized clinical specialty. No employment, referral volume, or clinical outcome is guaranteed.
